The Humboldt Coastal Nature Center serves as a "Gateway to the Dunes." This facility, renovated from an existing residence, is a welcoming educational facility and research center. It takes the shape of a barrel vault that is covered in sand, so it fits right into and is literally part of the ecosystem. The center is in the process of finalizing its LEED platinum certification. Many green design features are included in the project: a native habitat living roof, daylighting, natural ventilation, solar water heating and solar assisted radiant floor heating, recycled-content and regionally-produced materials, and water conservation.
